Announcement:

Lisa Bingley, Director of Operations at MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) has highlighted the vital role that skills development will play in the achievement of the UK government’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Ahead of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ (SMMT) Summit on 25 June, Lisa has thrown down the gauntlet to the automotive industry to embrace the workforce changes that will be necessary to fast-track new technologies and support the growth of electric cars.

The SMMT summit is set to feature keynote speeches from industry leaders and government including Chris Stark, Chief Executive of the Committee on Climate Change, and is expected to focus on issues including the future of low carbon and the transformation of the workplace.

Lisa said, “If we are serious about achieving this stretching target, then the automotive industry needs to take advantage of the skills training opportunities that can develop its existing workforce and nurture skilled individuals with an in-depth knowledge of the emerging technologies that are accelerating the growth in electric vehicle numbers.

“The MIRA Technology Institute is primed and ready to accommodate the industry and fulfil its demands for skills training in this highly specialised area. The Prime Minister has already highlighted that reducing emissions complements economic growth and better skills will make a positive impact on industry productivity targets.”

Formed through a partnership between industry and education the MTI provides a unique solution to this challenge specifically for the automotive sector. It offers a full spectrum of training opportunities from apprenticeships to bespoke and commercial courses for businesses from across the sector, from SMEs to global organisations.

Mindful of the need to drive higher level skills, the MTI provides access to a unique skills escalator, enabling progress to higher and degree level apprenticeships and beyond. This means that, for the first time, individuals can start an apprenticeship at Level 2 or above and progress to PhD level with the same training partnership. As a dedicated resource for the automotive industry, the MTI can help talented students to develop their skills and work towards achieving incorporated and chartered engineer status.

Training includes degree level studies and short courses delivered in state-of-the-art facilities covering subjects including cybersecurity, noise vibration and harshness, metrology, powertrain and battery systems. Programmes include automotive-related maths and science, health and safety, vehicle electrics and electronics, vehicle systems, engine principles and operation.

Lisa also said: “Skills development in the automotive sector is facing a real step-change as the focus on net zero carbon emissions gains traction. Increasingly, engineers will need to be able to add new skills to their repertoire as demand for electric vehicles becomes mainstream. We are in a unique position at the MTI to enable access to the skills that the industry needs right now. We have already completed the groundwork by gathering partners from industry and education together under one roof and this enables us to be highly responsive when organisations come to us with specific needs.

“We invite delegates at the SMMT summit to contact us when they return to base and talk to us about what they have learned at the conference and what support they need to start making changes and future-proofing their workforce and their businesses.”

This cutting-edge resource developed by joining industry with education to ensure subject matter is the latest available from current research is already helping to create specialist skills in some of the new disruptive technology areas including electrification and driverless cars, ensuring a sustainable supply of future technical specialists and engineers.

Through the MTI, employers can now access a new generation of automotive engineering apprentices, with access to the latest equipment for rapid prototype, 3D printing, robotics, fluid power, mechatronics, and electronic circuit design.
