Announcement:

The changing shape of the automotive industry and the latest developments in emerging technologies will provide the agenda for the next in a series of free online industry seminars from the MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) later this month.

Electric transportation, driverless cars, automated factories, digitised workspaces, and AI are all major issues that the automotive industry was facing even before the COVID-19 crisis. The industry has spent billions of pounds researching and developing advanced engine, fuel, and battery technologies to help drive down CO2 emissions. This has already helped to reduce average CO2 by one third over the last 20 years. By 2030, the UK government aims to see an end to sales of petrol and diesel vehicles, achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 as part of the Green Industrial Revolution plan.

Marcus Henry, Lightweighting Research Manager at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and John Hay, Business Development Manager for the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) will discuss the latest research and development themes within the automotive sector, the innovations that are driving technological change and how developments in power technology are changing the shape of the sector.

The webinar, scheduled for Wednesday 30 June 2021 from 10am – 11am on Zoom, is suitable for industry professionals and stakeholders within the global automotive sector, those responsible for skills and training, and students and graduates keen to broaden their knowledge.

Marcus Henry is a Chartered Engineer with 25 years of design and manufacturing experience in automotive and aerospace working with Tier 1 organisations and OEMs. At Jaguar Land Rover, Marcus leads a team of engineers that develop weight-saving technologies for vehicle body structures. He will be discussing the innovation process at JLR and introducing Project Tucana which focuses on sustainable and affordable structural composites.

John Hay’s career started with an automotive apprenticeship and progressed into teaching and logistics. He led the re-development of the irtec technician licensing scheme and now works closely with the automotive sector in his business development role with the IMI. John will discuss the new skills required for the mobility sector and will outline the IMI’s strategic approach to ensuring that the sector is suitably qualified for the switch to autonomous, connected, electrified, and shared (ACES) vehicles including an overview of the IMI Techsafe Register.

Keynote speakers will be joined by Tom Hamilton-Dick, Deputy Principal for North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College (NWSLC) and his colleagues Katy Urwin, NWSLC’s Head of Apprenticeships, and Chris Tullin, Director for Business Development and Student Employability, who will discuss the vital role that skills development will play in the sector’s ability to remain agile and responsive in the current dynamic environment.

Lisa Bingley, MTI Director of Operations said, “We are looking forward to hearing from Marcus and John in the latest in our series of webinars designed to provide cutting-edge insights on a range of topical industry issues. They will explore some fascinating themes including how the sector will need to adapt to meet the 2030 deadline for electric vehicle production in the context of the green industrial revolution.”

The MTI is the result of a unique collaboration led by North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, and its partners, HORIBA MIRA, Coventry University, the University of Leicester, and Loughborough University. It is helping to create specialist skills in some of the new emerging technology areas including electrification and driverless cars. Since it first opened its doors, the MTI has welcomed over 12,000 students and delegates. This includes over 800 studying for accredited qualifications from a Level 1 Institute of the Motor Industry certificate up to Masters’ degrees, and over 360 following apprenticeships at all levels. More than 8,000 automotive professionals have taken part in professional development activities.

Marion Plant, OBE FCGI, Chair of the MTI Operations Board, and Principal and Chief Executive North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College said, “We are pleased to be able to bring experts to the sector to hear about how the industry is evolving and we’re delighted to welcome such a high profile and knowledgeable speaker to our seminar programme.”
