Luke Andrew – FLT Advanced Apprenticeship

Luke Andrew ApprenticeLuke Andrew, 22, from Washington, Tyne and Wear, is soon due to complete a rigorous apprenticeship in forklift truck maintenance with his employer, Jungheinrich AG. One of the world’s most successful intralogistics companies and a top employer, Jungheinrich AG offers career opportunities in a wide range of professional fields. It provides bespoke solutions tailored to customers’ individual requirements including forklift truck supply and maintenance and logistics systems.

FLT apprentices working with Jungheinrich meet in the Midlands central location of the MIRA Technology Institute to train apprentice cohorts based across the UK. Luke has been training alongside colleagues from as far afield as Dorset and Kent in the south, and Middlesbrough in the north. Starting out as a Level 2 apprentice, Luke has progressed on to the advanced apprenticeship (Level 3) and is hoping to secure permanent employment with Jungheinrich as an FLT maintenance engineer when he is fully qualified.

Luke said, “We travel here to the MIRA Technology Institute every few months and spend two weeks studying here and staying nearby. The MTI is brand new and has all the latest technology so it’s a great environment and we find the tutors really supportive. It is hard work at times and has to be intensive because we are only here for a short period before returning to the workplace. The tutors have noticed an improvement in our exam results since we have been coming to the MTI.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school but an open day at Caterpillar sparked my interest in engineering and I am pleased that I chose to follow an apprenticeship route rather than going to university as I learn better in a practical setting.

“We have learned so much about all aspects of forklift maintenance from the mechanical and electrical aspects, to learning about engines, servicing and inspection. Travelling away from home to this central point has given me more confidence and helped me to mature as a person. I didn’t know any of my fellow-apprentices at first, but we have bonded well and learnt a lot from each other. This method of training has definitely improved my life skills as well as helping me to improve my technical ability.”

Luke is due to return to the North East next week and is keen to continue his studies in the future and take his qualification as far as he can go. With the MTI offering a skills escalator right up to Ph.D. level, the sky is the limit for Luke and his colleagues at Jungheinrich.
